This project involved transforming two adjoining properties—a semi-derelict 18th-century chapel and a small Victorian house—into a distinctive post-modern family home in St John’s Wood. The clients, professionals in publishing and the arts, envisioned a functional yet creative live/work space tailored to their family’s needs, including teenage children.

The design aimed to merge historical character with contemporary elements, creating an inspiring environment that blends family life with artistic expression.

The Brief

To achieve this vision, the design maximised the property’s structural volumes, introducing a warm, eclectic aesthetic through the use of exposed brick, wood, glazing, and steel. The Victorian house was seamlessly incorporated into the overall layout, extending the living area and creating separate zones to offer privacy for parents and teenagers.

Key structural updates included large glass windows in the rear gable and roof, which flood the space with natural light and counter the previously cloistered atmosphere. The impressive 9-metre ceilings were utilised to their fullest potential, with the addition of a mezzanine level that provides flexible living space.

The home’s layout was designed to double as a gallery, showcasing the owner’s photographic art collection. By blending historical charm with contemporary sophistication, this renovation successfully meets the clients’ vision for a dynamic, multi-functional family home.
