Asked by Decorex to design a dining room for their new feature ‘Design Encounter’, we joined forces with artists Divine Southgate-Smith and Bence Magyarlaki (The House of Contemporaries) to create sculpturally-inspired furniture objects within a futuristic dining room.
The geometric units, fabricated by The Interior’s House, aim to poetically reinterpret the notions of human interaction and movement in space, in particular, a dining space. Focusing on the tension between geometric forms and anthropomorphic postures, The House of Contemporaries became fascinated with simple actions: to fold, to twist, to morph, to expand and to contract.
Each unit has one simple rule; All objects can be compacted into one whole unit and can be redistributed in the space in multiple compositions. Differing in scale, form and materiality, standardised measurements are slightly exaggerated, everything is slightly too large and awkwardly mantled together. Order is not part of this spacial vocabulary.
‘We’d been working with Divine on screens and curtains for a new Japanese/Australian restaurant and the collaboration brought rich results. For Design Encounter, we decided to curate the space together with an ‘artist meets interior design’ approach. Always exciting to blend skills and see what comes out the other end.’ Zachary Pulman
The contemporary art-based pieces were contrasted with a classical 3D arch design in a 2D mirrored format. Zach re-imagined his Three-Legged Race laptop table with Raven Tiles to create a side table for the dining space. Raven Tiles have some really interesting qualities, they can positively influence the humidity of indoor environments and even inhibit the spread of household odours.
Marc de Groot’s Beehive Light and Fractal Light provided sculptural illumination for the space, whilst the custom rug from Shore Rugs had the perfect fade and texture for the concept.
Design Encounter at Decorex, open from 6-9 October 2019, was a journey through a series of interconnecting spaces for a unique, immersive and personalised encounter, a boundary-pushing collaboration between Architect John Allsopp and acclaimed interior designers Natalia Miyar, Run for the Hills, Samantha Todhunter Design, These White Walls, Zachary Pulman and Sella Concept. The installation incorporated personalised Augmented Reality.
This project has been shortlisted in the Frame Magazine Awards 2021

The Brief
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
