Hoyts, a leading Australian cinema chain, partnered with Zachary Pulman Design Studio to broaden its entertainment offering by converting half of their cinema screens into a competitive socialising experience. Named “The Funderdome,” this venue was conceived to provide a lively, multi-attraction experience, blending classic and contemporary arcade games, pool tables, shuffleboard, mini-golf, live music, and dynamic bar areas, all within a relaxed, beach-inspired setting.

The Brief
Taking cues from the iconic energy of New York’s Coney Island, The Funderdome captures the playful essence of a seaside adventure with eye-catching details. Guests are welcomed through a striking star-shaped tunnel that creates an immediate focal point, drawing them into the venue. Inside, bold arches dressed in deckchair and beach ball stripes, blue wave-inspired ceiling cylinders, and an indoor beach area all add immersive, nostalgic touches.
This distinctive design approach uses vivid, thematic cues to evoke a sense of beachside fun, enhancing Hoyts’ entertainment repertoire with a vibrant, social space.
